Some opportunities are fun and exciting. Other times we wish that opportunities that come our way would go on past us.
What would happen if instead of trying to find excuses and reasons for not taking part in some opportunities we would instead look at them as opportunities to “occupy our mountain.”
Joshua 17 – Ephraim and Manasseh were asking that they be given a larger lot of land. Joshua’s response uses what they asked for and turns it back around. “You are a great people. You should have more land. Although it is hard… you can do it!”
Joshua further told them that if they could take the mountain they could use them as a stronghold.
We all have mountains in our lives. There are giants… there are chariots. Our tendency is to avoid the nasty spots and stick to the small places that are relatively trouble free – our comfort zones.
- We need to focus on doing things because of God – 1 Samuel 17 – David understood that something needed to be done with Goliath. He understood that Goliath was speaking directly against God and it really bothered him. God’s reputation was really important to David.
- Know your history – Joshua 14:7 – Caleb knew that God had made promises… and he kept them. Caleb also realized that the reason he was were he was was only because God had gotten him there. It is vital that we remember that God has been keeping promises for a very long time.
- Lean on God from start to finish – Nehemiah 2 – God is looking for opportunities to show himself strong. These are often the opportunities that are the least appealing to us.
- Be thorough – The good samaritan made sure that the opportunity was thoroughly taken care of.
As we go into this coming week and opportunities come our way… let us think about things in light of whether it is something God would like for us to get involved with. Perhaps it is a good place for us to establish a stronghold for the kingdom.
